From Bornbusch to Bornebusch
In the numerous documents where our ancestors are mentioned it is noticeable that since 1528 (> History ‘origin’) the way of spelling our family name often diverges from the original and correct way.

Instead of “from the Bornbusch” there is exsists “of the Bornbusch” and the variety Bormbusch was also discovered. Moreover, even in former times there was often already an “e” inserted which made it Bornebusch instead of Bornbusch. Additionally, Dornbusch and Dornebusch were found in some documents. It´s proven though that a Bornbusch family member was concerned as the reverence to the Bornbusch location was given and in other parts of the documents that were added later it goes back to the correct way of spelling. There are several examples available on the matter.
We can only guess what caused the different ways of spelling. In former times, people that weren´t able to read or write would give their name, origin and type of issue in official places to a clerk that most likely didn´t know the person he was dealing with and probably sometimes ended up understanding and consequently spelling names incorrectly. In turn, the illiterate person concerned wouldn´t have been able to check on the spelling and then again maybe did not notice the mistake when the written words were read out to him.

The reason why the progenitor of the family, Gerd Bornbusch (1700-1776), registered himself as well as his children as Bornebusch is unknown and as we are lacking reasonable explanations on the matter, we are only left with guesses.
